With the benefit of 4 years coaching behind them this age group should be ready to make the transition from 7 a side games to the 11 a side game. This is a major change for our players as they are faced with the challenge of playing on a much larger park, playing longer matches, and suddenly sharing certain positions (central midfield, central defence, strikers). During their final year we support the transition to 11 a side and aim to concentrate on improving their technical skills, their fitness and their mental awareness. The ability to think for themselves is important at this stage. We encourage them to make effective decisions on the park, to be vocal, to accept responsibility and be accountable for their part in supporting their team mates.
During their final year, players may be given the opportunity to train or trial with senior clubs or, for that matter, any club who either shows an interest in them or where the player shows an interest in the club. Ultimately, by this stage we expect the player to take responsibility for his or her own performance and we hope to have prepared them well for the 11 a side game. We believe when they leave First Touch they will have been given a tremendous opportunity to develop their knowledge of the game and demonstrate terrific skills and techniques in a competitive environment.
